Worth listening.

Bangladesh Betar

Online Bangla news

1st session: UTC 1630-1730 SW 9650 kHz, 15520 kHz
2nd session: UTC 1915 - 2000 SW 7190 kHz,9650 kHz

Bangladesh Betar is a vital propaganda radio station for the government. It broadcasts Bangla islamic songs, Nazrul sangeet, Rabindra sangeet, popular modern Bangla gan, news review, international news covering SE-asia, Islamic world, sport news covering football, cricket.

Poor quality of transmission, although monitored from Abisko, Piteå Luleå Haparanda, Arvidsjaur in the north of Sweden quite clearly during the summer months. Depending on the solar activity one can try 15520kHz in Europe round the year UTC 1200-1600.
Many Bangalees have endless passion to hear every single sound transmitted by Radio Bangladesh or Bangladesh Betar. A process is now under work to free Radio Bangladesh to a neutral body.It would be a giant leap forward in the direction of democracy if Sheikh Hasina can materialize it.

(Freedom seeking Bangalees could hear their beloved Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman calling for the freedom struggle against barbaric Pakistani occupation army and urged the people to "make every home a fortress" a call just short of proclaiming Independence of Bangladesh ,8th March 1971 from radio station at Dhaka.

19 days later a relatively unknown middle ranking Bangali military officer Major Ziaur Rahman could use a small radio station in the port town of Chittagong and reiterated independence of Bangladesh on behalf of imprisoned leader of the Bangali nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
(Ziaur Rahman became president of Bangladesh in 1975 after a series of coup in the same year, thus establishing militarocracy in Bangladesh.) This radio station was bombared by the Pakistan Air Force on the 30th March 1971 but a group of dauntless Bangali freedom fighters could with much difficulties and risking their lives remove an 1kw transmitter to a safer place called Colonel Chaumuhoni.
This weak transmitter could cover only a part of Bangladesh which resulted in the news blackout for the western half of Bangladesh. Until middle of April 1971 when the revolutionary government of Bangladesh based in Calcutta started using a mobile radio- transmitter borrowed from Indian government. This 50KW transmitter started broadcasting programmes only in the medium wave with the name Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra from 23rd May 1971 both in Bangla and English(only news and news-review).

Since January 1972 Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra was baptized to Bangladesh Betar or Radio Bangladesh.Unfortunately different governments of Bangladesh have failed to make a museum with those radio-transmitters.

RB's external service regularly sends programmes in
Urdu, Nepali, Arabic, English and Hindi as well.

Radio Pakistan

1st session: UTC 0100-0200 SW 9515k kHz,12015kHz.
2nd Session: UTC 1200-1400 SW 11955kHz,15625 kHz

Bangla songs, news, news-review covering Pakistan and the Islamic world.

Both transmission and quality of programmes are not up to the standard. At Åbisko one could here Radio Pakistan's Bangla programme very clearly. Simultaneous monitoring in Stockholm with the same type of radioset provided only very bad reception.

Radio Pakistan also transmit's a programme in Sylheti on Fridays UTC 1335-1350 SW 15625 kHz and 17802 kHz. A good news for the Sylhetis, isn't it?

All India Radio

BBC

Online Bangla news(courtesy of Banglaradio dot com)

1st session: UTC 0030-0045 SW 7375kHz,11850 kHz and 15380 kHz
2nd session: UTC 0800-0830 SW 17655kHz,15405kHz and 11686 kHz
3rd session: UTC 1330-1410 SW 9605kHz,7225 kHz and 12080 kHz
4th session: UTC 1630-1700 SW 9605kHz, 9860kHz, 7205kHz and 5990 kHz

Since her maiden Bangla transmission around the World War-II, BBC Bangla Service is still the most popular among the vast Bangla speaking world.
Good transmission quality, high standard of news and programmes, good audibility during the worst weather disturbances will keep BBC Bangla service best for at least a decade ahead if it until and unless winds upp itself due to deteriorating economy. Although BBC tries to send very neutral news from every corner of the world but many people question about its subtle anti-Arab touch. BBC played extremely good role during the liberation struggle of Bangladesh. First to air the genocide commited by the Pakistanis in Dhaka ,March26th, 1971,the name of the BBC journalist behind the news was Simon Dream. A local BBC Bangali journalist Nizam Uddin Ahmed was murdered by stooges of Gholam Azam ,a muslim fundamentalist who sided with Pakistani occupation army 1971 and still active in Bangladeshi politics.

At UTC1330-1400 SW 15470 kHz one can hear a religion based Bangla programme especially for children. This wave length is usually used by BBC.Good quality of transmission. You can contact them at the following address:
Editor, Post Box 9406, Calcutta 700016, India.

Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting(IRIB)

1st session: UTC 0030-0130 SW 9575 kHz, 9535kHz and 7315kHz.
2nd session: UTC 1430-1530 SW 15345kHz,9635 kHz and 7290kHz.

Iranian radio started Bangla programmes after their Islamic revolution 1980. Islamic songs, political propaganda and Persian culture dominates their programme schedule. IRIB´s Bangla programme
can be monitored with less disturbances in most of the towns in Sweden. During the autumn atmospheric disturbances, dicreases the audibility.

Radio Japan

Programme Schedule

NHK or Radio Japan's Bangla programme is almost inaudible here in Sweden due to fading. But during April,May one can hear the 2nd session without interference. Rich in programmes with Japanese culture, news on Industrial giants like Hitachi,Toyota,Mitshubishi and many others. Bangladesh related news are also broadcasts before they become " too old news" for the Bangladeshis living in Europe,USA and elsewhere. You can expect promt answer from them if you send QSLcard.

Radio Beijing

1st session: UTC 1500-1527 SW9900kHz,8660kHz and 7260 kHz
2nd session:UTC1530-1557 SW 11600 kHz,9900 kHz, 8660 kHz and 7260 kHz.

Relatively weak transmission from Peking. Probably transmission beam is focused on area covering Bangladesh and West Bengal.News, news review is not different from the Chinese daily newspapers, like The Peoples Daily. Does not satisfy the news thirsty Bangalees living in ME, Europe and the USA. Radio Beijing is extremely censored and tightly government controlled.Stereotype news, music and cultural programmes. You can always get beautiful viewcards, calender and propaganda materials not weighing less than 1kg in the postal parcel ,if you just send them a viewcard with your name and address.

Radio Moscow

UTC1400-1445 SW11710kHz,7155 kHz and 7350 kHz

For couple of years RM had 3 transmissions in Bangla.Covering news from Russia, news review, translated poems and stories from great Russian poets and writers, Russian songs,Bangla gan, Russian songs,Rabindrasangeet,Bhatialigan etc ,made the station very popular. Transmission´s quality is very satisfactory in entire Europe. They have a good habit of answering your querries. Unfortunately the quality of programmes have detoriated since 1995.

Deutsche Welle-Köln

Online Bangla news

UTC 0100-0150 SW 6035kHz, 6055kHz, 7285kHz,
9515kHz, 9615 kHz and 9815 kHz.

A good Radio station with one of the best radio programmes for the bangalee people living in this planet. But their transmission schedule is not convenient for the Bangalees living in Europe. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose made his historical Radio broadcast from Berlin during the World War-II in Bangla against the British Rule in India with the help of DW.

Voice of America
Online Bangla news

1st session: UTC 0130-0200SW 7160kHz,11830kHz,15210kHz,17780 kHz
2nd session: UTC1600-1700 SW 7280kHz, 9590kHz, 11760kHz,15185kHz.

Since last 10 years one could not hear in Sweden VOA's Bangla programme clearly most probably due to interference or the atmospherical disturbances. World´s richest country has unfortunately poor performance in transmission quality. But programmes covering American literature, country music, Jazzmusic and of course interviews of the leading figures from both Bangladesh and West Bengal are inviting for any one interested in every aspect of life covering those two areas.

Organization of American States(OAS)

UTC 1650-1700 SW 1134kHz, transmitted from India

I
t has no relation with VOA. This organization promotes a better understanding of the OAS member countries through reports, newscasts, commentaries, music, interview. They send Bangla programmes.

Broadcasting Service of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

UTC 1400-1500 SW 15345 kHz

Saudi Arabia´s Bangla programme is not up to the standard, sends Arabic songs, Bangla songs, news, news reviews. Very informative for the Bangladeshis living in Saudi Arabia. In the worst snowstromy weather in Sweden one can listen Radio Saudi Arabia with minimum interference.

UTC=Universal Time Coordination is exactly same as the old GMT.
Bangladesh Standard Time BST=UTC+6.

In memorium:
Jagadish Chandra Bose(1858-1937) Bangali physicist.Born at Mymensingh, district town (NE of Dhaka-capital of Bangladesh).
Founded Bose Research Institute at Calcutta( now in India).

Western world intentionally delayed recognising his work on wireless telegraphy. Thus recognising Guglielmo Marconi(1874-1937), Italian inventor of modern radio transmission.

The British government knighted Jagadish Chandra Bose.
Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore dedicated his book "The Sacrifice" and the other plays to Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose.

This page on Short Wave Bangla Programmes is also dedicated to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose.

(In sanskrit Acharya means the great Teacher)
