Taher had the rare honor of being only East-Pakistani(now Bangladesh)to be a West Point cadet. As airborne trainee-commando, he performed his high altitude para-jumps(135 times) over the desert region of Nevada. It is the same academy where the gallant American WW-II Gen. Omar Bradley was trained.

As the Commander of Sector no.11, Taher made invaluable contribution in the War of Liberation of Bangladesh. His left leg was severely injured during an ambush-operation against the Pakistani Army
