Prior to
partition of India in 1947 no Muslim bangalee made any break through in the
field of arts and painting. A name which usually arises who were the people who
dominated the horizon of arts and painting in Bangla at that time. Undoubtedly
Abanindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Nandalal Basu, Asit Kumar Halder, Rabindranath
Tagore, Nirad Majumder, Rathin Maitra and
many others. Many of them were founder members of Bengal school. In this
constellation of painters and artists who later earned wide reputation beyond
boundaries of India.
Unfortunately one cannot find any name of Muslim painter.
It can be recalled that influences of Persian and Moghul art did not have any
impact in entire Bangla. Founder members of Bengal School of arts did often had
in their works a deep inspiration from the Hindu mythology, alpanas in bangalee
style and rural motifs.
Zainul Abedin is the only name from the muslim bangalee
society can boast of. He sketched the devastation of famine during 1937-1943. He
founded the School of Arts and Painting in Dhaka. One of his students was
Quamrul Hasan(born in 2nd December 1921 in Calcutta).
In fact Quamrul Hasan
graduated from Calcutta Government College in 1947. Not withstanding the
political volatility Quamrul Hasan migrated to Dhaka, where he joined as teacher
of Dhaka Art College. In 1950 he became the founder Secretary of Dhaka Art Group
